Armed Forces Medical College is a premier medical institute of India acknowledged as a centre of excellence for education and research. The college provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing students with assured career prospects in the defence services.

The institute was set up on 01 May 1948 by the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee by the amalgamation of various defence medical organizations. The "Graduate Wing" of AFMC was established on 04 August 1962 to provide a sustainable and steady intake of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is presently affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the MCI for conducting undergraduate and various post graduate medical courses.

Our Admission Process

Eligibility for Admission

1. Candidates should have passed the qualifying examination equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary period of 12 years of study, the last two years of study comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English.

A candidate for admission to the medical course “must have 60% *marks at +2 level in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology taken together) and have an aggregate of 140/200 in these subjects, both at qualifying and competitive examinations and should have passed in English”.

This is as per State and University guidelines. (* 60% in each and 130/ 200 aggregate for BC, 55% in each and 120/200 aggregate for MBC, and 40% in each and 80 /200 aggregate for SC/ST candidates). (BC, MBC, SC / ST are as defined by the TN Government; all rules are subject to change as per State & University guidelines. Example: if a candidate has 72 % in Biology, 66% in Chemistry and 70% in Physics, then the aggregate works out to {72+(66+70)/2} on 200 => {72+68} on 200, i.e. 140/200 and is eligible. However, a candidate with 68% in Biology, 72% in Chemistry and 70 % in Physics will have only {68+(72+70)/2} on 200 => {68+71} on 200, i.e. 139/200 and is not eligible. Candidates should have passed in all subjects of the qualifying examination of the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (Academic) conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Board or any other equivalent examination in one and the same attempt in the subjects.

2. Candidates should have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or should complete the said age on or before 31st December of the said year. Please check the relevant admission bulletin on the CMC website for updated information

Basis of Admission

1. Only NEET (UG) qualified candidates are considered for the selection process, which consists of two steps. A Computer based test (Step-1) consisting of multiple choice questions for Aptitude assessment is conducted in English, on an All India basis .

This is followed by Step-2 for short-listed candidates, which consists of special tests to assess the candidate’s character and aptitude. Interviews also will form part of the assessment at this stage.

During Step-2, the aptitude of the candidate for the healing ministry, willingness to serve in remote mission hospitals and a sense of compassion for the suffering will be assessed.

For Christian students applying under the sponsored category, a written test in Bible Knowledge will be a part of the tests at Vellore. Admission to the programme for the year is subject to being certified medically fit by the Medical board of Christian Medical College, Vellore.

2. The number of candidates for the MBBS course shall be 100 per year, of which not less than 42 shall be women.

3. The final distribution of seats will be as follows: a. All India Open - 16 seats.

(i) One candidate will be selected by the Government of India (separate requests for obtaining prescribed applications are to be addressed to the authorities.

(ii) Twenty percent (3 seats) of the open seats shall be reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribes (SC/ST). The candidates belonging to SC/ST should indicate this on the application form and a photocopy of the certificate of proof issued by the Deputy Tahsildar or the District Magistrate MUST be enclosed. The original of the Certificate is required.

b. Sponsored Candidates - 84 seats Up to 84 seats will be reserved for the sponsored candidates (See sponsorship guidelines Section 1.14 for further details)

4. The selection committee will shortlist eligible candidates to attend step-2, which will be conducted only at Vellore.

5. THE DECISION OF THE SELECTION COMMITTEE IS FINAL.

Department of Biochemistry

biochemistryThe Department of Biochemistry was established in April 1978 by amalgamation of parts of Departments of Physiology and Pathology. This department strives to achieve excellence in the fields of medical education and diagnostics by providing holistic education inclusive of up to date knowledge and research in the field of clinical chemistry, compassion for the patients and courtesy for fellow soldiers with an ultimate aim to fulfill the mission of this college.. The department was shifted to the third floor of Diamond Jubilee block in 09 April 2012.

The Dept has adopted the philosophy of Total Quality Management in all spheres of its functioning by streamlining all the processes and systems to achieve clientele satisfaction of patients as well as clinicians.

 

The dept reached an important milestone in its history when it attained accreditation by NABL (National Accreditation & Calibration Board for Laboratories) as per ISO 15189(2007) on 01 Feb 2010, which was renewed in year 2012,  2014  and 2016 successfully.
National Accreditation Board for testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is the only authorized and autonomous body of Govt of India, to grant accreditation in accordance with International organization for standardization (ISO) standards. It has granted NABL accreditation to Clinical Chemistry Laboratory of Dept of Biochemistry, AFMC as per the latest addition of ISO 15189 (2012).
The dept of Biochemistry is the first NABL accredited lab in the Armed Forces Medical services and is the accredited since Jan 2010 as per ISO 15189 (2007). This accreditation has been  renewed every two years . The laboratory has been successful in maintaining the quality since since its first accreditation in Jan 2010 and thus the laboratory was able to achieve NABL accreditation uninterrupted for the fourth consecutive time as per the latest addition 15189(2012).The ISO has revised its standards in 2012 by further adding 87 new clauses leading to more stringent quality. The NABL reaccreditation which has been granted is applicable to almost all serum analytes as per ISO 15189 (2012) and recently stands valid till 13 Feb 2018.

This department has the distinction of being the first Govt sector Biochemistry Laboratory to have attained NABL accreditation. This dept  also has the unique distinction of conducting an External Quality Assurance Programme for all the service laboratories of India. Lyophilised samples are despatched to  all services laboratories quarterly . Their results are analysed and each lab is graded according to its performance.

The Department’s passion for teaching can be judged by the fact that in the last five years, the MD students have been university toppers. The teaching methodology adopted is that of problem based learning exemplified by case discussions and Quality control clinics held by the department. The problem based approach is a force multiplier for our students to become better practicing doctors.   
The laboratory handles a massive workload of tests of approximately 600 tests per day. It handles routine tests in clinical chemistry as well as special tests in the field of endocrinology and clinical enzymology. The department is equipped with modern equipments viz Two fully automated biochemistry analyser with facility of therapeutic drug monitoring, hormonal assays and electrolyte analyser (SIEMENS EXL 200),. Fully automated RadioImmuno assay system, Manual Gamma counter, semi- automated chemistry analysers, Fully automated chemistry analysers ( TRANSASIA-EM 360 and XL 600), UV spectrophotometer, Electrophoresis and densitometry, ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay), and Nyco card reader for glycated hemoglobin, ISE (Ion Selective Electrode) besides host of other equipments
It also engages actively in meaningful undergraduate research as it believes that research is the only method of igniting young minds which propels them to the frontiers of learning. The Department has enrolled in two External Quality Assurance Programmes for proficiency testing which are Bio Rad EQAS & Association of Clinical Biochemists of India EQAS programmes. Our laboratory has been rated in the excellent category by both the EQAS programmes.
The dept has to its credit a new inexpensive method for estimation of ceruloplasmin which was awarded a patent. The other special investigations pioneered by the dept are ADA estimation.
Molecular lab has been established and studies on methylation of various genes in different carcinomas are in progress.
