A warm welcome to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital (LTMMC & GH), a premier medical institution of India! Today, LTMMC & GH stands with pride as a center of academic excellence imparting outstanding medical education as well as an institute providing quality care to patients with the motto of “Service through Excellence”.
We started as a fifty bedded hospital and a single OPD, in the empty military barracks after the World War II, as the “Indian Military Hospital” on 24th April 1947. In 1950, our institution was rightly named after a beloved founder of Independent India: Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Over the years, our hospital has grown by leaps and bounds to a 1462 bedded hospital. Currently with 300 senior faculty members and 550 postgraduate students, the back bone of the institution, we attend to around 18 lakh OPD patients and more than 82,000 indoor patients every year.
The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College was started on 30th November 1964 with the first batch of 60 students. The annual intake of MBBS students increased to 100 in the year 1990, and we are happy to state that MCI has permitted the intake capacity to be increased to 150 seats from 2016. We are proud to conduct broad specialty and 8 super specialty courses with a total of 213 post graduate and 29 Super Specialty seats annually. Besides this we have a Nursing course with an intake capacity of 100 seats, Physio Therapy (10 UG and 10 PG seats) & Occupational Therapy with (10 UG and 10 PG seats), 20 seats for B Sc Para Medical Technology course and 10 seats for the PG DMLT course.
Our Institute, being centrally located is accessible from both the major Express Highways in the city, thus making it the first major referral center for patients from out of the city. It is well connected to the suburban population of Mumbai. Dharavi, the second largest slum habitation in Asia is in close proximity to the hospital and majority of the poverty struck population residing there is benefitted by the services provided at LTMGH. Besides this it is in close proximity to the central, harbor and western railway lines.
This strategic location has resulted in LTMGH becoming a pioneer in trauma care and is now one of the most prestigious Trauma Care Centers in Asia. The ‘Trauma Care and Emergency Medical Services Center’,replete with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, as well as exceptionally proficient medical professionals and related staff. The timely medical services provided at the Institute during catastrophes have made it one of the most important centers for Disaster Management.
LTMGH has an extremely competent panel of medical professionals who are adept at handling the most difficult cases in a humane manner. LTMGH is known for its expertise in specialty and super-specialty departments and our faculty members are leaders in their respective areas of expertise.
Over the years, LTMGH boasts of establishing the first trauma care centre in Asia in 1974, the first emergency cardiac stenting 1977, the first outdoor Pediatric Thalassemia transfusion centre in 1984, the first Donor Human milk bank in Asia in 1989, and first Skin bank, the first to conducted a cadaveric renal transplant in Maharashtra in 1997. Our Pediatric Dept. is recognized for its Centre of Excellence for HIV, Neurology services including the first Learning Disability centre in Maharashtra, Autism intervention centre, epilepsy clinic and Nutritional Rehabilitation and Training Centre. The feather in the cap of the Pediatric Department is a state of the art Hematology –Oncology Ward that provides bone marrow transplants to needy patients at affordable cost. Our Institute was amongst the first few centers globally to perform dedicated Cardiac MRI services on a 3 Tesla scanner, the world’s first 3D printing of heart model to assist in cardiac surgery (for a series of DORV babies) is also another first to our credit. Our Interventional Radiology department with a biplane DSA machine, is doing complex interventional, including peripheral vascular and neuro-interventional work, under the guidance of world class faculty.
The Urology department has to its credit a state of the art, renal transplant facility, the first such center in Maharashtra to have conducted a cadaveric renal transplant. In 2017, the department entered the Guinness Book of World Records for successfully having removed the heaviest renal tumor weighing 5.2 kgs. LTMGH has done pioneering work in cadaveric bone retrieval in the state of Maharashtra as part of our Transplant and organ donation program.
Each department of the institution excels in raising the bar for patient care, with use of advanced equipment and updated, evidence based patient management strategies. The services are valiantly backed by the untiring efforts of the Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology laboratory services with increasing number of services and patient load each year . The paramedical staff including the efficient nursing staff, technicians, along with the class IV employees form the backbone of the hospital.
On the academic front, several international, national, state and local conferences and workshops are organized by all our departments every year to disseminate the light of knowledge to those working outside major institutions. Several national and international journal articles are also published in addition to review articles and chapters in books.

Eligibility for Admission
1. Candidates should have passed the qualifying examination equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary period of 12 years of study, the last two years of study comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English.
A candidate for admission to the medical course “must have 60% *marks at +2 level in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology taken together) and have an aggregate of 140/200 in these subjects, both at qualifying and competitive examinations and should have passed in English”.
This is as per State and University guidelines. (* 60% in each and 130/ 200 aggregate for BC, 55% in each and 120/200 aggregate for MBC, and 40% in each and 80 /200 aggregate for SC/ST candidates). Example: if a candidate has 72 % in Biology, 66% in Chemistry and 70% in Physics, then the aggregate works out to {72+(66+70)/2} on 200 => {72+68} on 200, i.e. 140/200 and is eligible. However, a candidate with 68% in Biology, 72% in Chemistry and 70 % in Physics will have only {68+(72+70)/2} on 200 => {68+71} on 200, i.e. 139/200 and is not eligible. Candidates should have passed in all subjects of the qualifying examination of the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (Academic) conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Board or any other equivalent examination in one and the same attempt in the subjects.

Basis of Admission
1. Only NEET (UG) qualified candidates are considered for the selection process, which consists of two steps. A Computer based test (Step-1) consisting of multiple choice questions for Aptitude assessment is conducted in English, on an All India basis .
This is followed by Step-2 for short-listed candidates, which consists of special tests to assess the candidate’s character and aptitude. Interviews also will form part of the assessment at this stage.
During Step-2, the aptitude of the candidate for the healing ministry, willingness to serve in remote mission hospitals and a sense of compassion for the suffering will be assessed.
For Christian students applying under the sponsored category, a written test in Bible Knowledge will be a part of the tests at Vellore. Admission to the programme for the year is subject to being certified medically fit by the Medical board of Christian Medical College, Vellore.
2. The number of candidates for the MBBS course shall be 100 per year, of which not less than 42 shall be women.
3. The final distribution of seats will be as follows: a. All India Open - 16 seats.
(i) One candidate will be selected by the Government of India (separate requests for obtaining prescribed applications are to be addressed to the authorities.
(ii) Twenty percent (3 seats) of the open seats shall be reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribes (SC/ST). The candidates belonging to SC/ST should indicate this on the application form and a photocopy of the certificate of proof issued by the Deputy Tahsildar or the District Magistrate MUST be enclosed. The original of the Certificate is required.
b. Sponsored Candidates - 84 seats Up to 84 seats will be reserved for the sponsored candidates (See sponsorship guidelines Section 1.14 for further details)
4. The selection committee will shortlist eligible candidates to attend step-2, which will be conducted only at Vellore.
5. THE DECISION OF THE SELECTION COMMITTEE IS FINAL.
Procedures
a) All communications with the committee shall be in writing.
b) The project proposals / & Amendments Processing Fees in the prescribed format will be accepted in office of the IEC – HR - LTMMC between 10.00 A.M to 12.30 noon. (Monday - Friday).
c) The research project processing fees are to be paid in advance prior to Document submission as a Xerox of the receipt is to be attached to the Research Project Submission Document.
d) The Research Project & Amendments Processing fee shall be received in cash / local bank cheque / Demand Draft payable in Mumbai
e) The projects submitted on or before 15th of every month will be circulated to all committee members and the proposal shall be reviewed for elements described as per the SOP.
f) A meeting, as described in the SOP, of all members will be held where each proposal will be discussed.
g) Project form other institutes will not be accepted in the EC

Fee Structure: Research project processing fee shall be collected at the time of submission of the projects.. This should be accompanied by a DD or Cheque drawn in favour of SRS, LTMMC & LTMGH.
